House of Saddam?

Monday, December 1, 2008
Seems that HBO is going to begin airing its production, House of Saddam beginning December 7th.

My reaction? Bleh.

The guy was a megalomaniacal whack-a-loon who committed atrocities in order to maintain his power. Why would I want to learn the details about his mental illness?

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Are they going to cover his romance with Satan? Because I think Tim Curry could sort of reprise his role from Legend to play the part, and with Satan's tendency to sing show tunes whenever he's emotional about Saddam jilting him again--well, Curry's totally got the voice for it.

So yeah, if it's got Tim Curry as Satan, I'd totally download the torrent.

I'm only in if it's Hinton Battle as Sweet.

'Cause that would sure explain a lot.

Don't see much use for this, myself.

I have yet to see anything on Iraq that is remotely accurate (makes you wonder about those Vietnam and WWII movies, doesn't it?), and this observation includes the footage with me in it (the Oil Terminals missions shown on the History Channel contain footage that my team took, and footage the news dweebs took on the boat deck as we geared up, which includes a couple of shots of me). Despite being fully briefed, they still managed to get the details wrong in large part, going for sensation instead of accuracy.

But then that was sort of the theme of this war, wasn't it? From the government on down.

Can't imagine House of Saddam being much different.

shocked, shocked I am to hear that movies don't get war right.

Someone had to say it.

My nephew once wanted to be an Army Sniper (that's what the recruiter that came to their school used to be). He thought war was "cool," because, you know, that's way they are in the movies. And he only wanted to see movies (and play video games), "that kept it real."

Even after I told him that I didn't understand that commercial that had snipers and the text said something like "You had 3 days of supplies, it's day five." What? Three full days of supplies? That means they ought to be good for another couple of days.

I had a sit down with him and explained that no movie was close to the real experience, if for no other reason as you don't get the smells, or the correct timing, or the real feeling of fighting for your life (and that wonderful copper penny/aluminum foil taste), let alone what real weapons to do real flesh. If I still had connections I would have taken him to see a tank firing line. He had never fired a firearm in his life (including the peashooters at fairs) and I'm sure that experience might have calmed his enthusiasm.

Fortunately he discovered sex the next year. Helped my argument a lot.
