Colorado House Bill 1157

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Colorado House Bill 1157 is currently pending before the Colorado Senate. This bill is an effort to regulate Naturopathic Doctors in Colorado. The bill is being championed by David and Laura Flanagan, who had a negative experience with a naturopathic doctor in 2003.

Please read the bill, and contact your Colorado State Senator to express your support if you agree that such regulation is a good idea.

I wish I lived in CO, if only to be able to write to every state senator and tell them to pass this bill. ND's are not MD's. They are not "doctors" at all, IMO. The majority of them receive training (if in fact they receive any) that is inadequate to even take care of minimally ill patients, much less serious ill people. C'mon -- herbs and plants and homeopathy? Sheesh.

Science-based medicine, baby.

I'm on it.

God damn I let you hit my hot button again.

Natalie's right these are not doctors. "Doctor" in Western languages has a very specific meaning and is attached to a very specific system of study. It is assumed by the layman, when used in the vernacular, that someone calling themself by that title has undergone that kind of study.

I have the right to call myself doctor, but I chose not to outside of the classroom for just this reason.

I urge you to call your reps and tell them that the bill needs to be amended to ensure that Naturopaths calling themselves "doctor" can, by virtue of that claim, be prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license.

Sorry, John - I just wanted my fellow Coloradans to contact their state senators on this matter.

I really wasn't trying to wrap you around the axle.
