...try and circumvent the Establishment Clause.

I guess when your party is in danger of losing the biggest political fight in several generations, the only thing to do is go completely off the rails and introduce this little gem:
H. RES. 1175
Expressing support for designation of the first weekend of May as Ten Commandments Weekend to recognize the significant contributions the Ten Commandments have made to shaping Western civilization and the vital role they played in the development of the institutions and national character of the United States.
Because nothing says "we're taking back the House and Senate in November from you commie-socialist-Nazi-loving liberal SOBs" like pandering to real Americans who are convinced we're a Christian Nation and want the gov'munt to recognize it, too.

You will be unsurprised to learn the resolution was co-sponsored by that conservative nutjob Michele Bachmann as well as other, less well-known nutjubs. I wonder what they'd do if Representative Keith Ellison introduced a Resolution to recognize portions of the Q'uran in a formal way? Probably recommend shipping him off to Gitmo...

Why, I just received an email
from my cousin (turns out it was from her husband. Who, in this day and age, doesn't have their OWN email? But I digress) about this very issue! (It was the email about how EVIL Obama is for denying an Air Force Fly-Over for a very worthy organization. Turns out their mission, in their own words, was to "Further the Word of Jesus Christ". Huh.).
In defiance of DoD Policy.
But they're PATRIOTS!
They SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
OBAMA IS TEH EEEEVIL!

Yeah, so I've been actually reading the constitution. Turns out my school district (Go Abington!) was involved in a landmark Supreme Court case in 1963 about prayer in schools. And how it was deemed unconstitutional.
The more you know!
I don't think my cousins husband ("Hubby") was too interested to discover that I support separation of church and state, and that picking and choosing which policies to support and which to ignore is bad.

Hmm, I wonder if college students will celebrate it by seeing how many they can break within a 48 hour period?

A "weekend"? WTF. If it were a real holiday they'd put it on a Monday or Friday and give us a long weekend. Bastards.

And, I forget, which of the Commandments had the 3 Branches of Government and which had the Checks and Balances?

Nothing like following that other long-standing tradition of separation of church and State. I swear, the whole party has gone insane and blind - they really don't seem to realize how few people are supporting their fringe, drag-us-back-into-the-'50s mentality. A few thousand slobbering teabaggers whispering sweet nothings in their ears makes them think the whole country is just waiting for them to save us. Buncha maroons.

MG, I find it more than a bit strange that you cousin does not have an individual e:mail address, but I'm a geek who believes I'm entitled to a certain degree of privacy, even from the Smart Man, so there you go.

Guys, I don't get it, either. I think it's simply a "cred" issue - you know, "I'M A REAL CHRISTIAN. I INTRODUCED LEGISLATION THAT PUTS CHRIST BACK IN THE GOVERNMENT." That might give them some props with the chuckleheads...

Janiece, I am thinking that whole branch of the family is a bit, uh, conservative, if you catch my drift.
I find that 50's mentality (hats off to Mrs. Bitch!) appears to be the fall-back position. Wimmen had no rights 'ceptin' what their Good Men gave them, the coloreds din't have no rights (let alone be PRESIDENT!) and it's how the world should be, right?
Amirite???
AM I????

MG, thankfully, you are not.

So if I say "Praise Zeus, God Damn it!" on a Sunday, there's 3 of the silliest broken.

Maybe that's why they want a whole weekend instead of just a day.

I think they might be on to something here . . . we could have a whole new cottage industry for neocon holidays. Just imagine, we could have "whackaloon week" consisting of "would've been presidents day" on Monday (celebrating the birthdays of Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and John McCain), The feastday of St. Rush (pick any day for this one, looking at his physique, he certainly does), Teabagger Tuesdays, Wealthy Wednesdays (hey, the power elite have to have one day where they don't have to rub shoulders with all of the rubes they're inciting to hate and violence), Teabagger Thursdays (c'mon now, you know most Teabaggers can't hold a thought for more than a day without having it reinforced by chanting and screaming), Fuck the world Fridays (we'll show all you damn furriners) and the Ten commandment weekend. It can be a whole week of gun totin', fag bashin', family style gettin' right with Jesus! C'mon folks, whaddya think?
