A Month of Gratitude - Day 2

Thursday, December 9, 2010
Yesterday I got a little wrapped around the axle over some entitled, right-wing douchebag's defrauding of the federal government in order to express his outrage over those greedy, lazy, good-for-nothing food stamp recipients who feed their families on $133.00 a month. One of the reasons I got so mad is because the author of the original piece has probably never gone hungry a day in his life, and has no idea what food insecurity is like.

And neither have I.

So today, I'm grateful that I've always had enough to eat, and never had to worry about what I was going to feed my kids.

As someone that grew up with food stamps (single mom, inner city Detroit), and someone that has been forced to use food stamps as an adult (car accident) -- people that get down on welfare tick me off. Yes, abuse of the system is possible. Yes, those having hard times often don't make the best food purchasing decisions. The sad truth is that it's often cheaper to by pre-packaged junk than to buy real food and cook it.

Food stamps and welfare aided in making me the contributing member of society that I am today. Had it not been there when I was younger, I'd likely have turned to selling drugs in order to eat. Had it not been there when I was an adult and had a horrible car accident, my family would have suffered immeasurably.

So I'm thankful for the welfare system. And that I was able to leave it behind. :)

I feel the same as Shawn about unemployment. Yes, people abuse it (I am distantly acquainted with some of them), but it saved my butt when I was laid off and though I got another job WAY sooner (only 6 months!) than most other people I know in my profession, it is comforting to know that it's there for the people I know who - through no fault of their own - haven't got another job or me if I lose the job I have.

Wonder if George Bush is on unemployment?

In NY he would be eligible.

I'm on my second round of unemployment this cycle. I found a temp job that lasted long enough to re-qualify me.

I'm meeting my state requirements for setting up a small business which relieves me of having to mail resumes and look for full time work.

In the mean time, if any of you need an ANSI Standards engineer in the media/entertainment areas let me know. Rates are good.

I'm guessing GWB is neither setting up a small business nor actively looking for work. I doubt he would be though. As we all know, no Republican needs unemployment. [Apologies to unemployed Republicans in the audience for the low blow. I couldn't resist.]
