Eating my words (and boy are they tasty)

Thursday, June 28, 2012
After spending the last week shaking my head and ranting about how people don't know how to act (and wondering how the race survives while so many appear to be just fine with the idea of eating their young), along comes an event that makes me eat my words.

The Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Who would have thought that Justice Roberts would be the one to step into the breach? Not me. Not ever.

I'm happy to be wrong, and delighted that (as my friend Phiala notes) the United States is being drawn kicking and screaming back toward being a first world county.

Don't munch on those words just yet. The Republican tea-baggers are losing their collective shit over this, sending out emergency donation emails to raise funds to elect people that will vote to overturn the Act and general decrying the end of the world as we know it.

But I agree, who'd-a thunk Justice Roberts would have sided with it.

It's nice to be surprised.

Indeed it is. Welcome, Maureen.

All my conservative relatives are bitching. As a nurse in a trauma ICU I've tried to explain health care billing to them, but they don't believe it. It's a liberal, socialist, nazi, black, non-american, government plot to take this country away from decent tax paying folks on medicare.

And one of my relatives thinks that the health care bill makes it impossible to sell your home w/o a bunch of "green" upgrades. Jesus, people can be stupid.

Oh Laura, I can see my Mom getting similarly wrapped around this axle. And my Mom steadfastly claims to be a Democrat!

Laura, we all have relatives that embarrass us to a greater or lesser degree. And sometimes the "greater" leaves us wishing we lived in the Outback with no access to other people.

However let me tell you that the first couple of minutes after 10 AM yesterday were scary.

Both Fox and CNN said repealed, ABC had the vote wrong, C-Span said 'Upheld, working on details' NYTimes just said 'working on details' and the Court server seemed to go into lock down.

I figured 5-4 repeal, and am happily eating my words.

Pretty much all of my coworkers were celebrating. Considering that we have one of the best health insurance coverage available, it doesn't materially affect our healthcare insurance status, the amount of celebration was pretty amazing.

I got the news from FOX, as I was sitting in the grill room of our country club waiting for my tee time . . . you might say that, given the setting, there weren't too many others who were as pumped as I was! I even had one long time member say, out loud, "What do you think your Dad would say if he heard you now?" I stared down the old coot and thought about it for a second and came back with, "If dad were here, he would ask them to change the channel so we can watch some golf and tell me that he hoped I kick the shit out of you in the money game today. Dad's gone, and don't ever use his memory like that with me again." Funny thing is, nearly all of my very conservative golf buddies told me afterward they were glad I said that. Maybe there is some hope . . . Not holding my breath, but maybe. Anyhow, back to the "Supreme Court, fuck yeah!" celebrations!

You're a class act, Matt. Unlike the goober who made that crack about your Dad.
