Link Me Up, Scotty - Catcalling Ebola Edition

White Privilege, explained in succinct form with easy to understand words.
____________

Elizabeth Moon discusses failure analysis as it relates to the first U.S. Ebola patient diagnosed in Texas.
____________

The truth about women in technology (specifically computer science), including a shout out to my personal hero, Rear Admiral "Amazing" Grace Hopper. Hint: The lack of women programmers today is not because "math is hard." It's because when programming became an important and valued skill as a result of RADM Hopper's work, the men pushed out the women pioneers in favor of themselves. Yes, that is as douchey as it sounds.
____________

Sixteen photos that will make you feel better.
____________

Todd Kincannon, former head of the South Carolina GOP and confirmed whackadoodle has now crossed into actual sociopathy by recommending that Ebola patients be put to death (but in a humane way!). For good measure he's also recommending we napalm the sufferer's villages. I wish like hell I was making this up, but I'm really, really not. Also? It will take a lot of napalm to wipe Dallas off the face of the planet. Just sayin'.
_____________

Jessica's Feminized Atmosphere addresses cat calls and how women should be FLATTERED BY THE ATTENTION, YOU UPTIGHT BITCH. My favorite solution: Act like a complete psycho by prancing down the street bellowing "It's a Grand Old Flag." Much more effective than "bitch face."
_____________

Because Librarians rock the house, that's why.
_____________

So two of the nation's four high-level biocontainment patient care units are located here in the West - in Montana and Nebraska. All four of the units are on stand-by to treat any emerging Ebola cases, but since Nebraska is the largest in the country, they are the first choice for treating these patients. Who knew?
____________

A Christian Pastor and Dad talks about the four promises he'll fulfill if his children are gay. Christians like him remind me that the whackaloons who disown or beat their kids when they come out are not demonstrating the consensus of the Christian community, and for that I'm grateful. The line that brought tears to my eyes: "If my children come out, we'll be out as a family." WORD.*
_____________

Video of the Week: Cyndi Lauper and Sara Bareilles team up with Hoda Kotb to produce a fund-raising video for pediatric cancer. Awesome. Also? Cyndi Lauper looks pretty amazing.

___________

* Of all the regrets I have about my parenting of Moe, my reaction to and support of her sexual identity is not one of them. She was my baby girl, no matter what, and I would have stormed the gates of Hell to defend her right to be uniquely "Moe."  And she knew it.

We knew our Alysia was gay long before she was up to discussing it. And it was a complete non-issue for us.

Damn it, now I'm crying again.

Be well, Janiece. I hope all is working out with the puppy.

Just because I can't stand knowing that there's a mistake on the internets, I'll mention that the article about Women Programmers is incorrect in stating that "Babbage's machine was never built." In fact he built a machine and one was built recently.

My experience after consulting in IT for mostly Fortune 100 companies over the last 25 years is that there are almost no female programmers. Maybe 10% in systems & networks, 30% as Project Managers, 50% Data Analysts, 60% Business Analysts, 80% Quality Assurance (the lowest paying area), almost no Enterprise Architects, 10% Solution Architects.

Perhaps there are better sources of data than my limited experience, but I'd bet the numbers are pretty close.

Thanks, TimBo.

I don't know if your numbers are correct, or not. I'm a Solutions Architect, and the only woman on a team of 18. That ratio has steadily decreased in the last 15 years, as my skills have improved and I'm in a position to command a higher salary. Being the token chick really blows.

And at least in my specific area of expertise (contact center), project managers are not typically considered engineering resources.

My experience is the same: Project Managers are not considered engineering resources, but I include them because it is a career path that some women who start out as programmers take.
