So there's a new "recreational" drug out there called Krokodil, and this is some nasty shit. Evidently it's made from codeine and hydrocarbons, and is highly addictive. And since it's made from hydrocarbons - you know, gasoline and hydrochloric acid - impure product does horrifying things to the flesh of those who use it. Since quality control isn't really a thing in the illegal drug trade, it happens a lot. What I want to know is, how does someone think to themselves, "I know, I'll mix codeine and gasoline and hydrochloric acid and use it as a recreational drug!" Christ, people are stupid. WARNING: The photos in this link are really, really gross. And sad. Link through at your own peril.

This is my third attempt at leaving a smart-ass pedantic sciencey comment about hydrochloric acid not being a hydrocarbon, my preference for carbohydrates over hydrocarbons, and my great desire to get back to doing actual science.
It's getting less funny the more I retype it, I'm certain. Not that the original was all that funny...
Phiala, I wondered about that when I read it in the article, but was too lazy to call it out. I wonder if the two catalysts together - gasoline and hydrochloric acid - are what causes the flesh to slough off in people who take the impure product?
Either way, sloppy writing.
Thank you for pointing out the article on Prions. I sent it to CJD and asked how this affects what we are looking to do as it is a misfolded protein as well.
The Krokodil thing is just wild and it shows exactly what an addictive substance does. The x-rays are even more gross. I'm doing a presentation on it next semester. IIRC, prognosis of someone addicted to it is death in 3 years from the first use. At least meth takes a decade or so.
