2010 Flower Pr0n - Chameleon Tree Edition

Sunday, October 31, 2010
A number of years ago, we replaced a tree in our back yard with a young female Maple. Now, we really like Maples, but this one is somewhat unusual - depending on the time of year, the leaves are different color. It makes the view from the deck a bit more interesting, and I can't wait until it fills out.

Spring - Purple
Summer - Green
Fall - Yellow

Maybe it is genetically related to Japanese Maple. I have that kind of maple by my waterfall and it does exactly that. New leaves in spring: purple; summer leaves: green; autumn leaves: brilliant yellow and sometimes a touch of red (depending on frost conditions). No matter what, new leaves in spring, summer or fall, are purple.

Brenda, I knew what kind of Maple it was when we planted it, but (of course) I lost the details. I really like the changes in color.
