Save the JWST, and Increase the Awesome in the World

Thursday, July 7, 2011
You know, I love the Hubble Space Telescope. Love, love, love. Its images have stunned me to silence, inspired me, and opened my eyes to the vastness of our universe. The repair missions have awed me with the abilities of our astronauts and those who support them. But it's nearing the end of its life, and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, is in danger of being defunded.

I'm not going to talk about the loss to the scientific community if the JWST is scrapped. There are plenty of scientists out there that are qualified to discuss that issue. What I will say is that if the government scraps the JWST, they will decrease the Awesome in the world:

Please contact your Senator and Representative to encourage them to save the JWST. Because increasing the awesome in the world matters.

Sadly, what makes it a good target for cuts is that it is way, way over budget and way, way behind schedule.

I realize that this doesn't seem to work well with weapons systems such as the F-22 Raptor fighter jet program or the unmanned Global Hawk aircraft program.

And if we got the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan, the money saved would eliminate the need for a lot of cuts that are likely going to be made to valuable programs.

ibeed - what happens to me when I'm punched in the nose.

I admit that I'm torn about JWST. Mainly because its cost overruns have taken money away from other missions that various co-workers have been working on, so it's sad for me to see those missions so pared down - or scrapped altogether.

But there's so much potential to JWST that I'm loathe to dismiss it completely.

Vince makes a good point about using the money we're spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention, oh, I don't know, ending the damned Bush tax cuts and closing tax loopholes for the very wealthy.

We should all help to increase the awesome and decrease the suck in the world. A worthy goal if ever I heard one!
