The Bad Old Days
It's time for another Facebook meme, this time courtesy of longtime reader Anissa. This one's about my Senior year of High School. The year was 1983...
1. Did you know your spouse? No. We didn't meet until I was in my early thirties. Worth the wait!
2. Did you car pool to school? No. I was anti-social even then.
3. What kind of car did you drve? A Volkswagon Rabbit. I loved that car.
4. What kind of car do you have now? A Fiat 500 Abarth and a Jeep Patriot.
5. It's Friday night... where were you? Working. I had to work every Friday night.
6. What kind of job did you have in high school? I was a soda jerk at a local ice cream parlor.
7. What kind of job do you have now? I'm a systems engineer. I design contact centers for Fortune 500 companies.
8. Were you a party animal? Sort of. As much as a party animal as you can be when you tend towards the anti-social.
9. Were you a cheerleader? You're kidding, right? Although I was good friends with a couple.
10. Were you considered a jock? Not even a little.
11. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir? Yes. I was in the chorale.
12. Were you a nerd? A closet nerd. I loved Star Trek, and read incessantly, so ended up being a nerd almost in spite of myself.
13. Did you get suspended or expelled? No, but I barely graduated. Apparently I had better things to do than to "attend class" or "do my work."
14. Can you sing the fight song? Was there a fight song?
15. Who was/were your favorite high school teacher? Probably Mr. Weatherbee, whom I've written about before.
16. Where did you sit for lunch? Out at the gate where we could smoke.
17. What was your school's full name? Wheat Ridge High School.
18. What was your school mascot? The Farmers. No, I'm not making that up.
19. If you could go back and do it again, would you? Shit, no. Mostly what I remember from my senior year is that I couldn't wait for it to be OVER.
20. Did you have fun at prom? Not really. Another one of those events where I was "expected" to go, but can't remember why I did so.
21. Do you still talk to the person you went to Prom with? No.
22. Are you planning on going to your next reunion? I've never been to a HS reunion. I usually to attend the annual get together for the equestrian group I was in, though. I spent more time with those kids than I did with my school-mates.
23. Are you still in contact with people from high school? Not really. But I do still have contact with the kids from my equestrian group.
24. What are/were your school's colors? Blue and gold?
What I've Done
This week's theft comes in the form of a Facebook meme that BEGGED for larger context and more detail. So I'm going to put on my mask and answer these questions about what I've done (and what I've not), in order to
Have I ever:
Fired a Gun
Yes. Everyone is required to learn how to fire a weapon in Boot Camp, and then periodically re-qualify thereafter as their duties require. My duties required, so there you go. I don't personally own a weapon, but the Smart Man likes to shoot at targets periodically for fun. Being a civil libertarian with a fondness for the Constitution, I have no issue with the ownership of firearms in a generic sense, so if you want to own weapons in a responsible manner, knock yourself out. But not literally, especially if you're holding a loaded weapon.
Gone on a blind date
No. Why would I torture myself in such a way? It's tough enough to find someone with whom you're compatible without resorting to random chance and the dubious judgement of intoxicated acquaintances.
Skipped school
Yes. In high school I made a career out of skipping school, to the point where I almost didn't graduate. Luckily I grew out of that, and never shirked in college.
Watched someone give birth
Does having a C-Section while conscious with a medical drape in front of your face count?
Watched someone die
No. Although I'm not sure doing so would have made my losses harder to bear.
Visited Canada
Yes. My study abroad activity for college was in Quebec City, and I've visited Toronto on business several times. I've also visited BC several times, on both business and pleasure. I think I need to plan more vacations to Canada, though. Actually, I just need to plan more vacations.
Visited Hawaii
Yes. I lived there for three years when on active duty, and went back with the Smart Man on our first cruise five years ago. I love living in the tropics, although I didn't love the cost of living. My apartment was in Pearl City, about two blocks from the Pearl City Tavern, also known as the Monkey Bar. No, I never went there.
Visited Europe
Yes. Just a few weeks ago, in fact. BEST VACATION EVAH.
Visited Las Vegas
Yes. Many, many times. Mostly for business, as conferences are frequently scheduled there, but a couple of times for pleasure. I don't particularly care for Las Vegas. I don't like to gamble, and suffer from crowd anxiety. But there's Cirque de Soleil, so it's not a complete loss.
Visited Washington DC
Yes. My Smart BIL and his family live outside Baltimore, and when I worked for the Military Industrial Complex, I went there often on business. Plus I have a number of close friends who live in that area, so it's always worthwhile to go to that part of the country.
Visited Asia
Yes. I've lived in Asia, actually, as well as making two WestPac/Middle East deployments when on active duty. Here are the countries I've visited:
- Philippines (resident)
- Singapore
- Hong Kong
- Malaysia
- Thailand
- Japan
- Korea
- Okinawa
- Bali
- Guam
- Midway Island
- United Arab Emerites
- Bahrain
Visited Africa
No. But we've put a eco-tourism trip on our bucket list.
Visited Florida
Yes, to my deep regret. I went to Boot Camp in Orlando, and have returned a number of times on business. People in Florida just aren't right, y'all.
Visited Mexico
Yes. I've been to Mazatlan several times, and visited Tijuana when I lived in San Diego. Love the climate.
Visited Australia
No. But the Smart Man and I are planning our retirement vacation to include it, along with New Zealand and SE Asia. We've started saving already, because that is going to be one expensive trip, given that we don't want to do it on the cheap.
Seen the Grand Canyon in person
Yes. We took the Smart Twins when they were about 12, and it's more amazing in person than it is in pictures.
Flown in a helicopter
Yes. See: Military Service.
Been on a cruise
Yes. Three times, in fact. One to Hawai'i, one to the Alaskan Inside Passage, and just recently to the Mediterranean. Our next itinerary includes the Baltic capitals in 2020 to include Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin, St. Petersberg, and Tallin. I love cruising.
Served on a jury
No, but I'd like to. Since I come from a military family and my father was also a Deputy Sheriff, defense attorneys avoid me like the plague. Which is short sighted of them, given my liberal tendencies. Statistics: It's not just for insurance companies anymore.
Been in a movie
Yes. A television movie, that is. In my misspent youth I was a member of a riding group that frequently provided "extras" for Western movies, and I participated a couple times. Note: It's really, really boring to be an "extra."
Visited L.A
Yes. I've been to Disneyland, and one of my ex-husbands had grandparents in L.A. I also toured JPL on a layover on my way to the Philippines when I was a young sailor.
Been to New York City
No. And this pisses me off, because Sistah Stacey and Brother J.R. live there, and we were supposed to visit last year. Life interfered, however, and we had to cancel.
Cried yourself to sleep
Yes. And hence woke up with the delightfully attractive swollen eyes that are part and parcel of such an event.
Played in a band
No. And I regret that. Because I can sing!
Recently colored with pencils
No. I prefer to color with gel pens.
Sang karaoke
Yes. I used to prefer Anne Murray songs, as our ranges used to be identical. 15 years ago I quit smoking and my range increased pretty dramatically, but I haven't done karaoke in decades.
Swam in the ocean
Yes. Lived in the tropics, baby.
Paid for a meal with coins only
Yes. Euros allow that quite easily.
Made prank phone calls
Yes. Back in the day when Caller ID and *69 was just a pipe dream.
Laughed so much you cried
Yes. Often. It's my favorite thing to do with friends.
Caught a snowflake on your tongue
Yes. I grew up in Colorado.
Had children
Yes. Although we lost one way too young. Fucking depression.
Had a pet
Yes. Dogs, cats, horses, fish, lizards, rodents...
Been skinny dipping
Yes. Once. I don't recommend it.
Rappelled down a building/tower
No. Not yet...I think I should probably lose some weight first.
Gone zip lining
No. See above.
Been downhill skiing
Yes. We used to ski often with the kids, but now we're old and creaky and prefer less strenuous hobbies.
Been water skiing
Yes. Fun!
Been camping in a tent
Only if being deployed to Korea in the winter counts. These days my idea of camping is a weekend stay at the Hotel del Coronado.
Driven a motorcycle
No. It's just never come up, and now I don't trust other drivers on the road enough to even try.
Jumped out of a plane
No. Are you kidding?
Gone to a drive-in movie
Yes. We used to go often in my youth.
Done something that could have killed you
Yes. More than once. Because I was stupid (and lucky) in my youth.
Done something that you will regret for the rest of your life
Yes. I think we all have regrets of this type, and for me, it's usually related to my being unkind to someone who didn't deserve it.
Rode an elephant
No. Elephants in captivity offend my sensibilities.
Rode a camel
No. Camels are smelly, foul tempered, and spit a lot.
Eaten just cookies or cake or ice cream for dinner
Yes. Of course I have. Duh.
Been on TV
Yes. I was in a Burger King commercial in my youth, as well as several kid-type shows related to the group I rode with.
Been in newspaper
Yes. Again: Youth group. Plus the local paper in my capacity as a Library Trustee.
Stolen any traffic signs
Yes. A stop sign, I believe.
Been in a car accident
Yes. But nothing major.
Stayed in Hospital
Yes. Several times. I don't recommend it, although I have to say my experiences with military hospitals were pretty darn good as these things go.
Donated blood
Yes. I believe in all sorts of blood and tissue donation. Because after all, I'm not going to miss any of that stuff.
Had to pay a fine in the past 12 months
Yes. Because apparently I can't remember to register my vehicles in a timely manner. This one is strange, as I've never been late in my life until this year. Mad Cow, here I come!
Eaten snails
Yes. They're tasty, but I have a problem with the texture...sort of like mushrooms in that regard.
Gotten a piercing
Yes. But only in my ears.
Gotten a tattoo
Yes. More than one, actually, and I'm researching a new one right now.
Driven a standard car
Yes. My Dad made me learn on a standard transmission, and the Fiat is a standard, as well. I'm of the opinion that this is a life skill that every adult should have. Because you never know.
Ever owned your dream car
No. Not yet, anyway. I have trouble spending more than $30K for a vehicle, actually, so it's unlikely to happen.
Been married till death do we part
Yes. Finally.
Been divorced
Yes. Three times, actually. Slow learner, and all that.
Fallen in love
Yes. But my idea of what "love" is has certainly changed over the years.
Paid for a strangers meal
Yes. Many times. Usually military members in uniform that I see at the airport, but elsewhere, too. I like to do this, and always try to duck out before they know what I've done.
Driven over 100mph
Yes. The Fiat is a zippy little thing.
Worked in a pub
No. I come from a family of alcoholics. This is not a good career choice for me.
Been scuba diving
Yes. I love this activity, and intend to revisit it again.
Found a dead body
No. And for this I'm grateful.
Lived on your own
Yes. Many times, but given my propensity to hermitage, it's not the best choice for me from a "interact with other people," and "have meaningful relationships" perspective.
Rode in the back of a police car
No. Just....no.
Written or published a book/story/poem/song
Does writing this blog count? Because while I enjoy writing (and think I have some small amount of skill), I don't want it to be a job, even a volunteer job. I write for my own enjoyment, to manage my feelings and work through my thought processes. I don't think I'd like it much if it was a chore.
Admitting my ABCs
__________
A- Age: 50. Can you believe that shit? There were so many years where I was always the youngest person in the room on a professional basis, and now that's most assuredly not the case. Also? My shoulder has started to hurt for no apparent reason. Lovely.
B- Biggest Fear: Dementia. As I've gotten older, my memory has started to go, and I'm terrified I'm doomed to a later life of fear and dementia. Scary.
C- Current Time: 7:27 a.m. I have a non-participatory call every Friday at 7:00 a.m., so I'm listening while answering.
D- Drink you last had: Caramel Vanilla Coffee. Hm....coffee.
E- Easiest Person To Talk to: This is a tough one. There are three people in my life with whom I can share anything:
- The Smart Man, because he's my partner in this life, and I love him to pieces. And he's my friend, too, which is extra-special bonus material. It's dreadfully important for me to have a partner I like, and who likes me in return. I've done it the other way, and it blows.
- The Mechanicky Gal and Sister Stacey, because they're my sisters, and I love them. They've seen me at the absolute lowest points in my life (and in the case of The Mechanicky Gal, more than once), and have helped pull me back into the light. It's not an exaggeration to say their friendship is one of the most precious things in my life.
F- Favorite Song: At the moment it's The Parting Glass, performed by Peter Hollens.
G- Grossest Memory: Being initiated to Chief Petty Officer while serving on the USS JASON. Yuck.
H- Hometown: Wheat Ridge, Colorado
I- In love with: The Smart Man. <3>3>
J- Jealous Of: I'm not really jealous of anyone. But I am envious of parents who have never lost a child.
K- Killed Someone? No
L- Longest Relationship: 17 years
M- Middle Name: Janiece
N- Number of Siblings: None that aren't dead to me. But I have Sister Stacey and the Mechanicky Gal, so I consider that an outcome that's well to my advantage.
O- One Wish: To have been able to save my daughter.
P- Person who you last called: Mom. I really, really don't like to talk on the phone, but make an exception for (as Moe used to call it) "The Parentals."
Q- Question you're always asked: "Would you mind taking this on?"
R- Reason to smile: Miss Jackson Pi
S- Song you last sang: Wreck of the Day, recorded by Anna Nalick
T- Time you woke up: 5:58 a.m. Thank you, Miss Jackson Pi.
U- Underwear Color: Peach paisley
V- Vacation Destination: New York, NY (with Sister Stacey and the Superlative J.R.! Squee!)
W- Worst Habit: Being self-righteous. I've been struggling with this for YEARS, and some days I'm more successful in keeping it under control than others.
X- Xrays you've had: Both feet, wrist, knee
Y- Your favorite food: The edible kind.
Z- Zodiac Sign: Who cares?

Chock Full of Crazy
Just returned from the dentist's office, where he removed my teeth through my nose. #crazydayIn addition, I really did go to the dentist this morning, and now my teeth are extremely cold sensitive, and my back feels like someone's been kicking me in the kidneys with pointy shoes. Yeah, I know - thems the breaks, you whiny ass.
Now using the rack as my exercise machine. I feel taller already! #crazyday
I've decided to sniff Play-Doh in lieu of drinking during the work day. #crazyday
Simple Green is PEOPLE! #crazyday
And to add insult to injury? The EBOLA is back in my life. With a vengeance.
Is it tomorrow, yet?
How about now?
Okay...
I Am A: Neutral Good Human Wizard (6th Level)
Ability Scores:
Strength-13
Dexterity-10
Constitution-13
Intelligence-15
Wisdom-12
Charisma-15
Alignment:
Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment because it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.
Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.
Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

They're Coming

They're coming.
We've holed up in the upstairs bathroom, and following our Zombie Survival Guide, we've destroyed the stair case. But now they're building a ramp made out of the bodies of our neighbors. Once they kill someone, they bring the body and dump it on the pile. In my usual fashion, I'm inappropriately curious about how beings whose brains are putrefying can figure out how to build such a structure.
I don't know how many of our neighbors have succumbed - we have no way to communicate with them since the cell towers and the central office were overrun.I'm a bit worried about the SmartBoy - he was working today, and we haven't seen him. He wasn't answering his cell before the towers stopped working. I can only hope he's okay, and that he remembers the lessons from the Guide.
We can probably last another three days up here, providing they don't reach the second floor. That doesn't seem likely, as they've already piled bodies half-way up the distance.
Good luck.

Your result for The Personality Defect Test...
Smartass
You are 71% Rational, 57% Extroverted, 71% Brutal, and 57% Arrogant.

To put it less negatively:
1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.
2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.
3. You are more BRUTAL than gentle.
4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.
Compatibility:
Your exact opposite is the Emo Kid.
Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Capitalist Pig, the Braggart, and the Sociopath.
If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42% Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well. Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored near fifty percent for certain traits.
The other personality types:
The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.
The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.
The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.
The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

About Saint_Gasoline
I am a self-proclaimed pseudo-intellectual who loves dashes. I enjoy science, philosophy, and fart jokes and water balloons, not necessarily in that order. I spend 95% of my time online, and the other 5% of my time in the bathroom, longing to get back on the computer. If, God forbid, you somehow find me amusing instead of crass and annoying, be sure to check out my blog and my webcomic at SaintGasoline.com.I'm Such a Nerd
Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test...
Pure Nerd
70 % Nerd, 30% Geek, 35% Dork

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.
The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendencies associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

25 Random Things
Today's meme is "25 Random Things About Me."
2. I've been married four times. I finally became successful when I realized that I was the one who needed to change, both in my choices and my outlook.
3. Seeing the way adolescent kids treat each other makes my heart ache for those who are different.
4. My family kept horses when I was growing up, and I became quite an accomplished rider. I subsequently outgrew my interest, although I wouldn't mind owning a mule.
5. I joined the Navy when I was 17 years old. My parents had to sign my enlistment papers.
6. I love good television, but I hate commercials and don't like having it on "in the background." NetFlix and TiVo are the best inventions evah.
7. When the Smart Twins are off the payroll, I want to go to Law School and take up a life of public service. I'm kind of over engineering. I'm really over corporate America.
8. When I watch nature shows on PBS, I feel bad when the predators actually catch the prey animals, even though I know they'll die if they don't. I can't take the terror of the prey animal as they're run down.
9. I have very eclectic taste in music. I love R&B, folk, classical, rock - pretty much anything but rap.
10. Even though I had a rather strained relationship with my dad, I still miss him.
11. Sometimes I think the process of becoming an effective adult is nothing more than fixing what's broken about yourself.
12. I've been a college student, on and off, for over twenty years. With the exception of a "B" in microbiology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, I'm a straight "A" student.
13. I always wished I was more athletic. Because I'm really, really not.
14. My favorite place in the world outside of the U.S. is Singapore.
15. The Smart Twins were nine weeks premature. When they finally came home from the hospital, they ate every two hours, around the clock.
16. I'm a bit compulsive about knitting, which is strange, since the only thing I do is make hats and scarves on a loom.
17. I met my Smart Man at work. We were on the same team, so I didn't ask him out until 18 months later, when he moved to another division.
18. I miss being in the Navy.
19. Sometimes I wish I had the natural gifts to be a scientist, instead of my natural gifts in the liberal arts.
20. I used to be poor. I'd rather not do that again.
21. I'd like to live downtown, but I don't think I ever will.

23. I once spent a summer roofing.
24. I've always wanted to drive a Beemer.
25. I'm a member of a sooper-sekrit online community called the UCF. To quote Jeri, we're dedicated to international espionage, debunking bad science, creative writing and comment-hijacking.
Time-Wasting Fun for the Whole Family
Well, now, via Splendid Elles, there's a bus slogan generator of win! Here's my contribution:
A Meme, Brought to You by Nathan
* The first six (6) people to respond to this post will get something made by me.
* Subject to the following restrictions and limitations:
o I make no guarantees that you will like what I make.
o what I create will be just for you.
o It will be done this year (2009).
o You have no clue what it's going to be. it may be a mix CD. it may be a poem. I may draw or paint or knit or cook something. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure, and not me either.
o I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.
* The catch is that you must post this in your blog or journal as well.
So go ahead. Sign up and raffle yourself off to some others. You know you want to.
I'll Show You Mine - An Internet Meme
This couldn't have come at a better time, because I couldn't think of a damn thing to write about today. So here you go:

Civic Literacy Report Quiz
I received a 96.97% on the quiz, because I couldn't remember the topic of the Lincoln/Douglas debate in 1858.
You want to know what's appalling? The average score for Americans on this quiz is 49%. College educators scored 55%.
I don't even have a bachelor's degree, and I scored better than college professors? How sad and pathetic is that?
Argh! The Pressure!
All the cool kids are doing this meme, and since I have a penchant for jumping off bridges if little Janey down the street is doing it, too, I'm on the bandwagon.
Plus, the paper I'm writing this morning for my "Cultures, Nations and Peoples" class is starting to piss me the hell off, so I need a distraction.

The Rules
1. Pick one film to represent each letter of the alphabet.
2. The letter "A" and the word "The" do not count as the beginning of a film's title, unless the film is simply titled "A" or "The," and I don't know of any films with those titles.
3. "Return of the Jedi" belongs under "R," not "S" as in "Star Wars Episode IV: Return of the Jedi." This rule applies to all films in the original "Star Wars" trilogy; all that followed start with "S." Similarly, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" belongs under "R," not "I" as in "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark." Conversely, all films in the "LOTR" series belong under "L" and all films in the "Chronicles of Narnia" series belong under "C," as that's what those filmmakers called their films from the start. In other words, movies are stuck with the titles their owners gave them at the time of their theatrical release. Use your better judgment to apply the above rule to any series/films not mentioned.
4. Films that start with a number are filed under the first letter of their number's word. "12 Monkeys" would be filed under "T."
5. Link back to Blog Cabins in your post so that I can eventually type "alphabet meme" into Google and come up #1, then make a post where I declare that I am the King of Google.Akeelah and the Bee
