'Tard of the Week - Joe Lieberman

Friday, October 30, 2009
This week's 'tard is none other than that attention seeking, whiplash inducing eight dollar 'ho, Joe Lieberman. Unless you live under a rock, you know that Jumping Joe has threatened to filibuster/veto/torpedo the health care reform bill due to Harry Reid's inclusion of a public option.

Here's the part that once again exposes Joe for the incredible fucking hypocrite that he is: Lieberman was in favor of a public option for years and years, and now that Olympia Snowe is the Belle of the Ball instead of him, well clearly the public option IS EVIL AND MUST BE DESTROYED. As long as destroying it makes him the center of attention for the foreseeable future, that is. Once the media's Eye of Sauron moves away from HIS RIGHTEOUS STAND OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, then I'm quite sure he'll find something else to grandstand about.

Seriously, Connecticut - can't you find someone a little less offensive to represent you? Anyone? Say, someone who gives a good goddamn about what his or her constituents actually want? Perhaps you could convince Saqib Ali to move...

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that I support a public option (along with 55% of the rest of America). And I love Stephen Colbert, lifetime member of my celebrity seraglio. "Stick to your principles, Joe, and as soon as you can, let us know what those are."

Saw the repeats last night and laughed my arse off. And I'm sure Lieberman is playing it for advantage (just like Snowe did). My suggestion for Harry Reid is to hang the pass or fail decision on him (helped by his own statements) and hold him out in the wind instead of negotiating. Sometimes you have to throw an elbow to remind people that it can happen.

In all fairness to Connecticut, they did make an effort to oust him last go-around. That's how the former Democratic candidate for Vice-President of the United States became an "Independent" who "caucuses with" the Democrats.

Regrettably, this is what the Senate Democrats and Obama get for not punishing him when they had the chance. I understand what their rationales were. But is there anybody who didn't see this coming?

This is like a sequel to the old story about the woman who thaws out a frozen snake she finds on her porch and is surprised when it bites her. In Snake II--The Reckoning, her son comes in to see how she's doing and checks on the heater, and finds her dead with the snake in front of the fire.

"Holy crap!" the man says, "Did my mom just get bit by a snake?"

"Yeth," the snake says, "and now the fire she made to warm me hasth gone out, and I'm thhho cold again."

So the man picks the snake up and sticks it under his winter coat. "You'll be warm in there," he says, "OWWWWWW-MOTHERFU--YOU JUST BIT ME YOU LITTLE SONOFA--"

And the snake says, "Dumbathh."

Eric, I'm really not surprised, no.

But seriously, it's like this guy broke up with shame and then became one of those bitter breaker-uppers that is so averse to his former sweetheart that he completely goes in the opposite direction moving forward.

That totally made sense in my head...

Gotta love Colbert common sense and his love of the absurd.

I am not a fan of Joe Lieberman (hence forth JL). I do commend him for challenging his (former party). The motives you alleged notwithstanding, they may or may not be accurate.
As a republic we do not elect members of Congress to vote how we want, we elect them to make wise decision on our behalf. Personally I would not want a Senator or Congressperson to need to take a poll for every vote. Listen to the people, weigh options, but the vote is theirs, we gave it to them. Assaulting the people of Connecticut, I believe, is a cheap shot. They do what most Americans do, vote for the incumbent. With seniority comes influence and power in the Congress. So when a constituency does not like a stance or vote of a long term incumbent it makes it difficult for that constituency to vote them out.
While I may not agree with JL, I wish more people in congress, for the good of the nation, would be willing to follow their true beliefs and not party doctrine.
You may be a Hot Chick and from what I have read here, an engaged and intelligent one as well (both are appreciated). Seeing the Colbert clip reminded me that many people only get their news from Comedy Central. I wish more people were engaged.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that I haven't the slightest idea if a public options is best or not.

Fathergoose, thank you for your thoughts.

I am perfectly aware of the philosophical points of a government run as a republic as opposed to a true democracy. I, too, expect my elected representatives to "vote their conscience" rather than be a slave to the polls. However, JL was publicly in favor of a public option for years and years, and now, when his support would actually, you know, mean something, all of sudden he doesn't think it's the right thing to do. Hypocrisy much?

As for my shot at the people of Connecticut, I don't think it's cheap in any way. Regardless of their motivations, people should be accountable for their political actions (or lack thereof). Our own representative was, for many years, that freeze dried wackaloon Tom Tancredo. I never voted for him, but you can bet I was writing letters monthly expressing my displeasure with his voting record and his positions. I was his constituent, and I have an obligation to let him know, both via my franchise and via the power of the pen, what my expectations and desires were.

Now I have no idea whether or not the citizens of Connecticut are holding JL's feet the fire or not - but I do know they have repeatedly voted him in to represent them. And I'm calling them out on that choice, because I think it's the wrong one. If they're satisfied with his representation, then I still think they're stupid, but it's certainly their right to retain him. Just as it's my right to point and laugh.

As for getting the news from Comedy Central, I have to say that particular phenomenon is more indicative of the MSM's failure to report honestly and meaningfully than a failure on the part of the citizenry. I get my news from many sources, but Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert don't share my celebrity seraglio with any MSM reporters. Except perhaps Anderson Cooper, who I would describe as an escort-in-waiting.

And on a completely unrelated note, I'd also like to point out that because of my background, the first time I heard the term "engaged" in the context of "being involved," I thought the corporate drone who used it wanted me to go to war with the customer in question. Now whenever I use it (or someone else does), I think of that and giggle.
