Chamber of Horrors

Wednesday, September 23, 2009
I'm taking my last vacation day for fiscal year 2009 today. This morning I'm going to be joining the Longmont Senior Center's knitting group. They're the organization that accepts my charitable knitting for distribution among Adopt-a-Family, Head Start, and the VA hospital.

They're nice ladies, and I try to get up there a couple times a year.

But this afternoon...this afternoon.

This afternoon I have to go visit that freaky horror show, the Colorado DMV. The photo on my driver's license doesn't look a thing like me now that I've gone au naturale with my Hot Hair, and I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before the TSA pulls me aside for some "special counseling."

I'm sure the experience will give me plenty write about, a la Jim Wright's Things That Chap My Ass. Although the title may be, Things That Make Me Run Screaming Into the Night in Search of High Powered Weapons.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!

Always keep your high powered weapons on your person, that way you don't have to run into the night searching for them.

Also, remember that DMV drones are like zombies - brain eating zombies - you have to lop their heads off or they just keeping coming at you. Machete, bring your machete.

NY DMV, outside NYC, is now fast.

Getting a new photo takes about 30 min at the most, has been in and out. Plates to replace a lost plate, while a replacement is ordered and arrives, is equally fast. They have plate pairs in the counter drawer.

Y'know, the DMV in Morgantown--unless you go on the first day of the month when they're swamped--is pretty nice.

Fast service, and when we were getting my grandmother's non-drivers ID, they were awesome in helping us (she didn't have everything she needed, and they accepted her birth certification which was all but handwritten by the local priest when she was born.

I'll be at the DMV on Friday replacing my license, so I'll be feeling your pain.

Luckily the one near my place isn't as overrun/brainless as others in L.A. I think I may survive.

In Ohio we're finally able to go to whatever DMV we want (instead of "the closest to home address" or "in your home county"). While it's a bit of a drive, the office in Middlefield is hardly ever busy, in and out in less than half an hour. I love that law.

So how long did it take you?

Ours is great - one of the benefits of small town life.

Interestingly enough - WA has offloaded vehicle title, licensing, and vehicle license renewal to private contractors in a different office, so the DMV only handles people licensing. It cuts down on the wait. :)

Last time I was in the DMV it wasn't too bad. Still not an experience I look forward to.
