Inspired by a conversation with my Smart Man last night, I've been thinking about this year's Presidential election.
As you all know, I support Barack Obama. Everything I've read about him indicates he's a highly intelligent person of integrity, who understands where the country is, and where it needs to go. Information available to date suggests he's who he represents himself to be. He appears to be treating the general public as thinking, sophisticated members of society, capable of understanding complex issues and making value judgements about them. I believe his ability to compromise and build consensus gives him a better chance of leading a successful administration than the other candidates.
And yet...and yet.
There is no guarantee that once in office, he won't be completely ineffective, for any number of reasons.
There is no guarantee that once in office, his "true colors" won't come out, and we'll find he wasn't as honorable or ethical as we'd thought.
There is no guarantee that once in office, he won't lead the country in a direction we didn't anticipate.
There is no guarantee that once in office, he wouldn't turn into a crazed, megalomaniacal nutjub. And if you think that couldn't happen, I refer you to Cheney, Dick.
So I'm trying to maintain some level of cynicism, as armor against disappointment.
And yet...I hope.

I believe the last comma in that sentence should have been a period or a colon. Just sayin'.
And btw, could you make your daily dose of satire clickable to see it full sized? The copy is too small to read. kthxbai.
Nathan, if I knew how, I would. Anyone who can advise me on how to do that, I'd be grateful.
I, too, am keeping my fingers crossed.
I support Obama as well, and HILLARY and her apparent sense of entitlement to the Presidency is really starting to piss me off.
I just don't see how being married to the leader of the free world qualifies you to take the office yourself. I'm married to a roofer, does that mean I can come over and replace your roof? Bitch, PLEASE.
My cynicism is also balanced with hope.
cindy,
If you worked cheap I'd let you come roof my house. ;)
How'd you put the image in there Janiece? If you can get at the source, you should just able able to add a hyperlink tag around it.
And I HATE capatchas, because the ones I get are ridiculous. I mean how do you type in gkwfmnzk without making a mistake?!
Michelle, I saved the image as a jpg, then posted it from my drive. The source URL for this one is http://atheism.about.com/od/religiousright/ig/Christian-Propaganda-Posters/Boy-Scouts-Fight.htm. The full size URL is http://z.about.com/d/atheism/1/0/n/3/3/Boy-Scouts-Bigotry-e.jpg.
Neither one is accepted by blogger as a valid address for a picture.
Sorry Michelle, that's too hard a job for me to work cheap.
And I hate the heat. My Celtic skin practically bursts into flames at the very thought of crawling up there in July.
What page element are you using to be able to post your daily dose?
I posted before I was ready!
I agree with you on the hope vs cynicism continuum. There is no magic bullet, and yet... maybe new energy and new priorities can help!
Jeri, I'm using "Add a Picture" and trying to specify the web as the source.
Ah...
Does it allow you to create a hyperlink *around* the image. i.e. just as you can make text a hyperlink, you can also make an image a hyperlink, and it's the exact same process.
For example, in WordPress, after I insert and image, I can then select that image and then create a hyperlink using that image.
Am I being to basic? Smack me if I am.
cindy, I am also an anti-fan of the heat. That's actually been on of the biggest issues with my grandmother, because I like to keep the house COLD, winter and summer.
But you can't blame me for trying, can you?
Michelle, if it does, I don't know how to do so in Blogger...
Oh... hmmm...
is there any way at all to get at the code? i.e. is there a code view anywhere? If there was, you could add the hyperlink from there
RE: size of your Scout Pix
The image you have on your site only has a resolution of 72 and a physical size of 1.375 X 2.08.
I tried to load it into Photoshop to play with it but no success...G.I.G.O
I was able to get the first line.." To put.."
the last line "in their place"
The middle two ???
The footer read "For a Christian America"
I will see if I can find it some where else at a higher resolution
The link for the poster(s) is http://atheism.about.com/od/religiousright/ig/Christian-Propaganda-Posters/.
The sizing is a function of blogger, as the originals are not that small.
Michelle, if there's a way to access the blogger code, I don't know what it would be.
I suppose I could put them up on Flickr, but I don't have the rights.
Success:
The Middle two lines read
"Godless
Sodomites"
Now aren't you glad you ask?
Just a reminder...
No matter who is elected thay are going to have to work with the Congress.
With the present level of
decisiveness in government; I will not hold my breath waiting for that to happen...
Yay! I just got strawberry jam from the jam fairy. (Well actually from you via the Postal Demons.)
Yay! Can't wait for breakfast.
My suggestion: Don't use the "post a pic" element. Use "add html" instead. In that you can put in whatever html you need, such as:
<a href="location_of_pic" width="something_in_pixels"><img src="location_of_pic"></a>
It's how I put in my dragons.
... err, wait. I think I got that wrong. The "width=" should be in the <img> tag, not the <a href> tag. Drat the mess of code for the < and > symbols I'm using.
AUGH!
The above should've been:
... err, wait. I think I got that wrong. The "width=" should be in the <img> tag, not the <a href> tag. Drat the mess of code for the < and > symbols I'm using.
MWT, that totally works. Thanks! I knew there were perks inherent in hanging out with people who are smarter than me!
Nathan, I'm glad it finally made it there. Enjoy!
Yay! :) Pay no attention to my typo meltdown...
mwt
Glad you knew what to do--not knowing the capabilities of blogger made it... difficult to guess. :)
Also, if you're going to put in width, you should also put in height. If you're not going to put in both, you probably shouldn't put in either.
