I Am On Va-Ca-TION!

Wednesday, July 2, 2008
I'm on vacation for the rest of the week, mostly because my company's policy is "use it or lose it," and I have a number of days left I need to take before the end of the fiscal year.

No plans, really, since the Smart Man and the Smart Boy are both working. Today I got my hair cut and prepared home-made lasagna. Tomorrow I'll probably do some chores in preparation for a 4th of July BBQ.

But I'll be damned if I'll work through vacation days that are part of my benefits package. Especially in light of recent layoffs at my company.

Hmm...maybe I should be using this time to update my résumé...

What are your vacation plans for this summer?

As is fairly common, GF and I didn't know which days we'd have off until way too late. I can't find a hotel or cabin at any lakes or beaches nearby. Crap! And it's supposed to rain on the 4th. Crap! Crap!

But I think I'm playing golf tomorrow.

I don't know what we're doing this weekend. We'll probably take the boat out one day and explore a new corner of the Puget Sound in spite of gas prices. We can't spend too much time away because the doggies purely hate fireworks...

I have no spectacular plans for the rest of the summer. There's way too much business travel on my calendar. I'll try to boat, garden, fish and generally be outside as much as I can, and work as little overtime as possible.

Enjoy your time off! ::calling the hairdresser for a long overdue appointment::

No clue what my plans are this weekend, but I'll probably end up hanging out with the 5-year-old's family. That seems to happen a lot. The dad is an excellent cook, which means I end up very well fed, which is a small price for them to pay for me to run their kid ragged for 5 hours. ;)

As for the rest of the summer, well, I've not been tied to schoolyear scheduling since graduating grad school. Summer isn't really distinct from the rest of the year for me. Every November I take most of the month off to do nanowrimo, but I have nothing in mind other than that this year. No more weddings or funerals for a while, I hope.

Vacation? What is this "vacation" of which you speak?

All of my vacation time is converted into sick time as a rule. Every. Fucking. Year.

Self-pitying whine over. ;)

We're taking tomorrow off to drive to the Craft Fair at Ripley, where we will also spend time with my brother while eating funnel cakes and looking at really amazing crafts, so of which may or may not become Christmas presents.

Then we're hurrying home because my Aunt and Uncle are in for a visit. Friends stopping by to visit on the 4th, as well as the family, a wedding on Saturday (for which I don't even have a damned card yet.) Sunday, either a picnic or collapsing in exhaustion.

Nathan,

Drive to Baltimore. Find "G&M's".

Wait in line for a really long time.

Order crab cakes. Ignore their pitiful salads and other sides. Eat some of the best crab cakes I've ever had.

Do I have to sleep in the car?

lasagna? Got any leftovers?

As to plans, I'm retired Janiece, it's like summer vacation all of the time. la la la :::skips off:::

:::comes back, dragging feet, eyes downcast::::

Okay, not really. I'll do some fishing and maybe go camping a couple of weekends. Mostly I'm waiting for school to start up again, so I can return to writing full time - because not writing is making me insane.

Nathan,

I'm certain they have hotels in Baltimore.

These crabcakes you speak of ... are they actually more crab than cake? I've yet to run into a crabcake where that is the case...

We are doing our "dream holiday" this summer... Or something close to that... My three ladies will spend six weeks in various European hot spots: Costa Brava, French Riviera, Tuscany... I'll be flying back and forth from London (contrary to common misconceptions and my personal desires, I only have so many vacation days even in UK), but it should be grand nonetheless...

We plan to have some fireworks in our backyard tomorrow - need to annoy the British neighbors...

MWT,

You almost have to be in Maryland to get real Maryland style crab cakes.

Take jumbo lumb crab meat, add some binder like mayonnaise or egg and a *tiny* amount of bread crumbs. Add some spices, like Worchestershire sauce, shape into cakes, refrigerate for several hours, then pan fry or broil.

How do I know this? Because my aunt is bringing crab meat, and my grandmother is going to be making crab cakes.

G&Ms crab cakes are similar. Huge hunks of crab meat with just enough binder to hold everything together.

Crab cakes made correctly are most excellent.

Being self-employed, vacations are easy to arrange, but in August I am going to take off several days to go to Mpls/St. Paul for the State Fair and Renaissance Festival, and see family in the area.

Of course, I'll have my cell phone and access to high-speed Internet, because I'm never truly 100% on vacation.

Uh, that was supposed to be "vacations aren't easy to arrange".

Not much this summer. My vacation is taken over Labor Day. I have a campout with friends down in Texas that has been going on for 31 years. You may have heard me speak of it, the Hole in the Ground campout. This year will be the 32 year! I'll have 2 weeks in Texas, and I'll visit my sister and her family while I'm down there.

I live by the beach so it's almost like a vacation every weekend. And when the tourists get too annoying we just get drunk in the yard and swim in the pool.

The year is all the same to me, which is nice when I arrange trips AFTER the chillen are back in school. I will endure a flight from SD to Philly in September to see that family, as traveling during Thanksgiving (to teh East Coast at least. Don't rule me out for Thanksgiving, Janiece!) or Christmas is NOT going to happen in the near future. Flight delays and longthy time spent at the Philly Airport is NOT going to happen.

I have a most excellent recipe for Crab Cakes, which I will post sometime this morning for your enjoyment.

Amy, you know you're always welcome!

And enjoy your transcontinental flight. /snark.

Vacation, yeah, I gotta get me one of those sometime soon (I can count the "real" vacations I've taken as an adult on... wait, okay, I now need two hands).

And this weekend starts off with, more work (council, interviewing firemen). Then, more work (brochure way behind schedule). Add in more work (yard work, it's been raining every time I get a moment, supposed to be dry the rest of the weekend, also need to clean).

Hope you enjoy your time off.
