Nerd Love

Wednesday, June 4, 2008
As you all know, my husband is a Smart Man. We suit each other in our nerdiness, and converse about such nerd-fest topics as SIP, telecom, erlang theory, BSG, and why Jean-luc Picard is a superior commanding officer. Yeah, baby.

But I have to admit I still have Nerd Love for other men.

Men like astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

He's the keynote speaker at this year's TAM 6, which I will not be attending. Bummer.

Hmm...Nerd Love. Who's your Nerd Love?

I'm kind of striking out on this one, surprisingly! Top of my crush list is non-nerd Laird Hamilton, big wave surfer and Hawaiian super-hunk.

On the nerd list, I guess I'd have to say Alton Brown and Neil Gaiman... can't think of any others right now. I need to do more science reading, clearly!

Jean-Luc the best? Pshaw!

He's *good* but Sisko is better.

ppffftt!

I said he was a "superior commanding officer." I didn't say to whom he was superior.

But as a career Navy NCO, I would say I would personally prefer Picard to Sisko, mostly because the skills required to command a ship of the line are different than the skills required to command a base in the territory of foreign nationals.

You go with what you know.

Random Michelle K said...

Ok.

I guess I can accept that.

But Sisko is cuter. ;)

Janiece said...

But they both have cool voices!

Plus they're bald...which should tell all those toupee men to reconsider.

Random Michelle K said...

That is definitely true.

They are both cute. But Sisko was *also* Hawk.

Plus? He punched Q.

Both Sisko and Picard are (or will be) hawt, hawt men with phenomenal voices, but Picard's my captain, oh captain.

Part of it is the English accent. Part of it are his gorgeous eyes. And a big part of it is I've been in Patrick Stewart's presence a number of times (Star Trek convention, live performance of A Christmas Carol) and that man's voice has made me weak in the knees. Seriously. The first time I saw Stewart live was at a Star Trek convention back in my 20s. He addressed the audience with the simple word, "Hello," and the crowd went wild. My knees buckled. I suddenly understood why girls screamed in the presence of the Beatles.

Picard, you be mon capitaine.

That said, uh, how long do you have re: Nerd Crushes? For starters, I'll go with physicist Brian Greene. So very pretty.

And, of course, my boyfriend, CuteFilmNerd. Got myself a mega crush on that fella.

Carol Elaine, you can go on for as long as you want.

When talking of real people, my nerd crushes are Jennifer Ouellette blogger and science writer extraordinaire, and Kari Byron, Mythbuster extraordinaire and artist who graduated Magna Cum Laude in Film and Sculpture at the San Francisco State University.

Ah, Vince, you had to bring up Mythbusters. *sigh*I loves me some Grant Imahara.

Another favorite: the aforementioned Alton Brown. Also, a dear friend of mine who used to work steadily as an actor, always portraying nerds (which is why I'm including him here - he was moderately known for his nerd/geek roles - especially this one), but can now be found repairing computers. I had quite a thing for him once upon a time, but while I've moved past those feelings, I will always have a little bit of a crush on him.

When I have time I'll post more. Because Nerds. Are. Sexay.

I'm surprised none of the guys has mentioned Dr. Kirsten Stanford from TWIS.

I may have some same-sex Nerd Love for her myself...

Here's something for the Patrick Stewart fans.

I think I'm a bit in Nerd Love with Jean-Luc...

Want a revealing, embarrassing factoid from my youth? I grew up with a single mom, and the captain was like a huge father figure for me. To this day, I don't trust people with Romulan haircuts... :D

Janiece said...

Shawn, Romulan haircuts are like mullets.

People who wear them should never be trusted.

LOL!

Carol Elaine, I remember that episode of Amazing Stories. How cool you're a friend of Larry's.

Janiece, the Dr. Kirsten Stanford links don't work.

And I have a nerd crush on a fictional character - Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan of 'Bones', played by Emily Deschanel.

I love smart women, both in fiction and in real life.

Heh. More than 90% of the women I work with on a daily basis are Ph.Ds, M.D.s, or both. And 100% of the women I live with are.

An embarrassment of riches, as it were.

I'm obviously a retard.

John - I am so jealous.

Janience - OK, another nerd crush. I've added both to my "things to read 'cause I like them and don't feel like working" list.
