Boogie the Giant Schnauzer appears to feel much better today - hopping around and acting like his old self.
We went in this morning to have his bandage/splint changed. His vet has decided not to reapply the splint. Instead, Boogie has a thick, well padded bandage on his lower leg, ending just below the hock. This will apparently immobilize the toe and the joint on either side, and allow it to heal with no possibility of future pressure sores.
He's much more comfortable with this new arrangement. Too comfortable. He's started charging around with his usual abandon.
The ulcer (pressure sore) on his hock is still pretty ugly and swollen, but it's open to the air now, and hopefully will dry out and heal pretty quickly. I'm already having to get after him to leave it alone. The next week should be chock-full of fun-filled activities consisting of me chasing the dog around the house saying, "Boogie, no! Don't lick that! Slow down! Don't run!" and other admonitions.
I can live with that. I'm just glad he's more comfortable. He's napping now, recovering from the trauma of the vet's office.

I've heard tell of an ointment you can put on animals wounds that tastes *disgusting* to dogs and cats.
I can, of course, only imagine what this would be, because we are talking about creatures that lick their own butts and eat poop.
If he won't leave it alone you might want to check with the vet. Kat's wound is healing slowly because he won't stop licking the wound. (But it's not infected, so we're not worrying about it.)
Michelle, he's on antibiotics already, and he's pretty good about leaving it alone if we tell him to.
The big thing is the guy's getting back to his old self. Since they can't talk, you can't always tell if a pet is ill or just having a bad day--which is why it' so damn reassuring when they act like their normal selves, even if you start worrying they're going to hurt themselves again. I guess you could even say it's good to be worrying that Boogie's running around too much or that he's going to lick something until it's sore again, since at least you know what you're worrying about.
Anyway, I'm glad he's feeling better.
What Eric said.
And that ointment probably tastes like stinky tofu [/shudder].
Give the big fella a pat for me!
